Why was it working so well?

A little-known secret from the world of neuroscience:

There's a part of your brain called the 'Reticular Activating System' and it's responsible for filtering out the sensory information that comes in, so you don't get overwhelmed by stuff like the air pressure in your left nostril. It governs what we pay attention to. And it is trained, at least in part, by the thoughts we habitually think.

So if you're usually stuck on the 'complaining train', focussing on everything that is going wrong and worrying yourself sick, that part of your brain - your 'attention filter' - is trained to let through information about things that match your general tone of thoughts. So you will notice more things going wrong and more things to worry about.

If you practice gratitude daily, even for just a few minutes, you start to rewire the Reticular Activating System, so that it filters through more positive things, so you notice more often what is going well. It becomes a virtuous circle. So daily gratitude reprogrammes your brain to spot things that are going well, and to think happier thoughts, even when you're not doing your gratitude practice.

If we retrain ourselves so that our habitual mind-stories are more about what is good and what we feel thankful for, then that will create a positive shift in our response to life's brown-stuff.
