This week we’re talking about worrying. What’s the problem with it? Why is it such a bad idea, even though so many of us are addicted to it?
What can you do about it? And the answers might surprise you!
Worry doesn’t prevent tomorrow’s sorrows.
Thinking about everything that could go wrong isn’t suddenly going to make everything go right.
In fact, it makes it harder to spot the things that are going right.
So it’s more likely that you’ll feel bad.
But it will steal today’s joy.
How can you feel happy today, if you’re telling yourself stories of what could go wrong tomorrow?
It’s physically impossible!
While we tell ourselves stories of worry and woe, our body triggers its automatic reactions to those events, as though they were really happening. You’ll experience the same heart palpataions, stress responses and hormonal emotional changes, as though those worries were real – as though they were happening in front of you, right now; which they’re not.
Firing off the body’s ‘worry-responses’ makes it impossible for you to feel happy – physically, mentally and emotionally. And it aso has a long-term impact on your health.
Later this week, we’ll look at a magic wand for worrying. But, for now, how about just allowing yourself to become aware of your worries? And how about simply accepting that they’re there – there’s no need to do anything about it just now, other than to accept yourself, where you’re at, without judgement.
